Hi everyone!

When I was in Latvia last year, I subsisted on Double Coffee fare (miam!) and discovered the joy of оладьи.

Today, feeling inspired, I went searching for a recipe that would recreate this culinary marvel (okay, I might be waxing poetic).

I found this one. It asks for рукола. Question: what is рукола? A google search has yielded no help, except to show me that it is some sort of green leafy food. What would it be in English?

Also, does any one have a good recipe of оладьи they would like to suggest? :o)

Рукола is rocket (not a self-propelled projectile).

Рукола must be the rucola lettuce. Leaves look very much like dandelion leaves, taste is kind of sharp. In my language, the old name of it is "mustard lettuce", literally translated. Today, it is just sold under the name "rucola" (which is probably an Italian word/name).

Oh, and there's about a metric bazillion different kinds of oladyi. If you want the potato kind, look here:

LOL! Metric bazillion is something new :-) To date I've heard only "metric crapload" and likes, but now the word "metric" seems to apply to dimensionless units, too :-)

"Mister Bush, 4 Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq yesterday."
"My God. This is terrible. How many is a brazillion?"

I believe рукола is arugula, and I fail to understand why would be in оладьи. To me оладьи is something made of sour milk, flour, eggs and sugar with possibly a little baking soda. Alternatively, you can have картофельные оладьи that consist of grated raw potato, flour and egg. There is no lettuce in any of them.

Could be Latvian, yes. Russian оладьи are traditionally eaten with sour cream, honey and all kind of jams.

I had some zucchini ones, which were pretty good.

That's what I make when I feel like it -- my family LOVES it :) it's called кабачковые оладьи.

Yes, and cabbage/carrot/zucchini/squash/vegetable marrow оладьи are done like potato ones, you just substitute raw grated potato with any vegetable from the list. Eat with sour cream.
