What is the word for the verb "silence," like if I were to say "Silence!" or "Be quiet!" ? I keep getting the noun when I look it up on translating websites. Does anyone know of a site that has a anglo-russian dictionary that lists verbs, nouns, adj, ect? I used to use Rambler.ru but now it has changed.

Thanks!

Молчать is the verb you're looking for.

"Silence!" - "Тихо!", "Тишина!"

It depends on the context very much.

"Молчать!" as someone below has suggested is quite rude.
You may want to use "Тихо!" or "Тишина!" but then again it depends on the situation.
The most polite way to say it is probably "Помолчи(те), пожалуйста, немного."

Молчать! - a rude imperative, an order.
Тихо! - moderate, but still an order.
Тише! - the most tolerate, kind of begging.

Then there's also "Тс-с-с!" - informal, neutral (that is, neither rude nor too polite), often accompanied by index finger placed near lips of the person speaking. Might sound a little childish, though.

Come on. This is not Russian, it's Odessa lingo :)

Ahh, is that where it comes from? Honestly I didn't realize that. Thank you.

Admittedly, ша is not standard Russian... but it seems appropriate in certain informal situations. So to be proper from now, unless I'm in Odessa, цыц у меня ;)

Well, not exactly Odessa, or not solely Odessa - it's rather any Southern Russian and mixed Russian-Ukrainian dialect. Remember Lev Kassil's "Кондуит и Швамбрания"? "Тиф разносит вша. Точка, и ша!" :) The guy was an Ukrainian settler in Volga region.
