Both phrases are in informal (and that's the least I can say) language.
I'll try to translate the first one..

Это шо они такое жрут <=> What (?the hell) are they (?eating)
Can't understand the context, the verb жрать may possibly mean "to drink"

Overall sense may differ: it can be curiosity, or can equally be irritation.. It depends on intonation and context

Seen your journal, got the context. Готично! ;)

kav2k expresses it a way too smoothly.

have seen those "two things", i could only say "OOOMMMGGG!!! what the f**king speakers are you conversating with?!!"

in "это шо они такое жрут" the word "шо" is a substitute for "что" (here as an interrogation word). it's really a phonetic variant of the latter. "жрать" is a vulgar word for "to eat", also means "to devour", "to drink" (concerning alcohol, esp. vodka :)
other stuff should be understood at your level. note also, that the wording order is a bit incomprehensible, though it's not rare for colloquial speech.

"хуясе готика" - is verily obscene. it expresses the speaker's astounding with something he saw (or read) by comparing it to gothics (as the amount of amazement, not literally) and using the word "хуясе" which comes from "ни хуя себе", it's only used in this sense.

Hm... I've also seen a ни фигня себе. Is that a less vulgar term? I know the least vulgar would just be ничего себе.

And as for х*й, I've also seen it as х*йня. What's that an abbreviation of? Or just... what is it?

That's either фигня (meaning: 1. a thingy; 2. something stupid; 3. something of bad quality; 3. something irrelevant) or ни фига себе (meaning: oh my).

х*йня is the same as фигня (actually, the latter is an euphemism for the former)

"ни фигня себе"
actually, you can't say that.
the correct variant is "ни <б>фига себе"
It is less informal than "ни x... себе", of course, since "фигня", "фига" etc. are not obsceneties, however you should use it only in a very informal discourse.

I have to remind that, according to the communtity's rules, you have to keep obscene language to yourself, and even if you are interested in such words in a strictly linguistic manner, as everybody here swear they do, you still MUST hide it behind an LJ-cut. Please do so or I'll have to remove this post.

"Хуй" is a vulgar name of a penis. Most commonly it's used as a curse word in different sorts of constructions.

I'm not sure if discussing these words is ok for this kind of post, maybe it should be moved to a special one.

Kind of speaker who do not care whether the owner of a journal would understand their comment. Actually, he gave you a hard time translating it and apologizing to members of this journal. Do not blame yourself for his errors ;)
Look at this dialectically: now you know a bit more about Russian, don't you?
