expressing time

One thing that has always confused me is how to express duration of time in Russian. As in the following situations, off the top of my head:

"I have been a student here for five years." (I'm cheating a bit here; I need to write a short 'biography' of myself in my дневник for homework, which is what got me thinking about this.)

"I need to finish reading the book by Friday."

"It took me six hours to write the assignment."

"I will be there in ten minutes."

I know that duration can be expressed with 'на' and 'за', but I can never remember when to use one over the other. What's the difference?

Я учился в университете пять лет. (if you are no more a student)
Я уже пять лет учусь в университете (if you are still studying)

Мне нужно дочитать (прочитать) эту книгу к пятнице.

Мне понадобилось шесть часов для выполнения задания (на выполнение этого задания; чтобы выполнить это задание)
or even simpler На это задание у меня ушло шесть часов.

Я буду на месте через десять минут (or Я доеду/доберусь за десять минут as in "it will take me 10 minutes to get there").

duration can be expressed with 'на' and 'за'
Я уезжаю на неделю. I will be away for a week.
Я сделаю это задание за пять минут. I will do this task in 5 minutes.

There is also через.

I will be there in ten minutes - Я там буду через десять минут

You use "на" usually when you borrow something to specify the term:
I need your computer for an hour - Мне нужен твой компьютер на час

You use "за" when you speak about how much it would take someone to complete a job:
It will take me an hour to finish the homework - Я сделаю уроки за час

Я учусь здесь пять лет.
Мне надо дочитать эту книгу к пятнице (or: до пятницы, before Friday).
Это задание у меня заняло пять часов.
Я буду здесь через десять минут.
