I just sent an e-mail to a Russian and it bounced... How do you say "I tried to send an e-mail to Sergei and it bounced" ? Do you even use that verb in Russian or is there something else that Russians use? An inquiring mind wants to know:)

There's no direct equivalent of "bounced" in this sense, which is probably to do with the fact that "bounced cheques", or cheques in general, were virtually nonexistent under Socialism. So you'd say "я пыталась послать Сергею мэйл, но он вернулся".

спасибо :) I had a feeling that there would not be a direct translation from Engish into Russian for this... I guess I thought that there might be some sort of Russian slang for this, something that would not be quite as literal as "oн вернулся".

There was a slang verb "отфутболить" with about the same meaning, but I haven't heard it for years, and never in connection with e-mail.

"накрылся" is a part of a famous idioma - "накрылся медным тазом" - that meens that something hadn't happend (sorry for my english) ant wont happen in future

Sysadmin slang for a bounced mail is "отлуп". Somewhat obscure, admittedly.

Hm, now that I think of it... отлуп is from лупить and might have been, originally, a term from some lapta-like game with a ball and a bat, in which case it's a literal "bounce"... at least I can't think of anything else it could come from. The meaning is indeed obscure nowadays.

You certainly wouldn't be laughed at, but like nbuwe said, it's sysadmin slang (I'm not one, so I didn't even know) and people might not get what actually happened. The everyday meaning of "отлуп" is colloquial (not slang) for a blunt rejection, something you might receive from an ex-girlfriend, a publishing house or some municipal office.

Are you sure "лупить" came from lapta? As I understand "лупить" means to tear off, like "облупить кору, кожуру, шелуху и т.п." (to tear off skin, peel etc.).

There is also a phrase - как облупленный. "Я знаю его как облупленного" = I know him very well.

I didn't say it came from lapta. I noticed the funny interplay of the consonants but of course it's a coincidence. What I meant was, лупить is (also) to strike, so could отлуп technically mean striking at something to send it flying in the opposite direction? The ball and the bat were only a conjecture.

What email server do you use to send and receive in Russian?

I just wrote a letter using http://www.translit.ru/i2.php (I also do that here in LJ - puts all the Latin characters into Cyrillic for me)... The person I was trying to write to had an e-mail through vocim.ru and it bounced... I don't think you need any kind of specialized email server to send and receive mail in Russian, at least I don't - my gmail and yahoo accounts work fine for that :)

I'll have to try that, because every time I use cyrillic when sending and receiving emails on Yahoo, everything comes up as capital Ds.

I haven't sent anything in Russian via e-mail, but I am on some mailing lists where I get stuff in both Russian and Azeri and I can read them fine... Maybe it's Yahoo then? If you like, I can send you a gmail invite (I have like 50 of them...). Let me know.

I do know that my Russian letter was fine, because I copied one of my colleagues in Moscow and she wrote back, complimenting me on it (this was the letter that I got major help on yesterday...).

I use Yahoo, and I usually get emails in Cyrillic coming up with random scrambled letters at first. You can usually fix this by playing around with the character encoding settings on your browser.

"Накрылся", "отлуп" is a bit of youth jargon.
If it's an inquiry addressed to technical support you can say:
"Сообщение на адрес n@n.n не было доставлено" - and then quote the autoreply ("rejecting" message) so the people from the support know who to help you.
If you write it to a friend:
"Я пытался / пыталась отправить Сергею письмо, но мне пришло сообщение [о том], что оно не было доставлено".

"Вернулось" is possible (though I wouldn't recommend it), some people say "не прошло".
