The last post reminded me of something else. In the movie Бриллиантовая Рука, Nadyezhda makes a big deal out of her husband's lying, saying that he really didn't fall открытый перелом, rather закрытый перелом. Then afterwards it became a rather funny story to tell her friends when asked. ...What's that all about?

Закрытый перелом is a simple fracture, basically a crack in the bone.
Открытый перелом is when the broken bone sticks out, something far more severe.

I am not sure what do you mean about funny story. The thing about перелом is that he told his wife at first that he has a closed fracture (which is less serious than an open fracture). Later, when he started acting suspiciously, his wife guessed that he is not telling her something; but she is so good and naive and trusts her husband so, that she decided that he has an open fracture instead of a closed one, and does not tell her so she does not worry about him.

Whew! Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I tried thinking of it as "opened/closed wound," but at the time it didn't make sense to me.

Mironov's character gets worried when she talks about how the arm "isn't the way he tells everyone it is", but is then relieved when she says "it was an open instead of closed bone fracture". The only point of her retelling the story is so we can laugh as we see him wriggle with suspense.
