Can someone tell me what the word проподать means? One of my Russian friends used it, and I thought he meant пропадать, but that wasn't the case. It's not in my dictionary; help!

It's пропадать, but written with mistake for purpose. There was a cummunity called падонки who used distorted and offensive words, then they made their way to the Russian-speakin LJ. Main resource of падонки is http://www.udaff.com/

Is it преподать or преподавать?

пропадать - disappear (when speaking about lost things or people)

Exactly :)
You can't always count on correct spelling by native speakers.
Whatever their mother tongue is :)

I guess the above commenter is slightly wrong. This is most probably just a typo (or, rather, a result of a slight illiteracy).

padonki ("scum", written with a deliberate error) use entirely different vocabulary and a set of word distortion rules
