[identity profile] missa-gorightry.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
I have to write a composition about what I did this summer, and I'm having a little trouble translating class names.

-Psychology as a Natural Science (i.e. brain chemistry)
-Teaching English as a Second Language
-Class and Money in the American Novel (social class, that is)

Any suggestions appreciated!

-Psychology as a Natural Science (i.e. brain chemistry)
literally: "Психология как Естественная Наука"
but most likely it's "Психология и нейрохимия"

-Teaching English as a Second Language
Преподавание Английского как иностранного языка

-Class and Money in the American Novel (social class, that is)
Классовые и Денежные отношения в Американской Новелле

may be "Преподавание английского как второго языка"?

"english as a second language" does not necessarily mean that it's 2nd could be 3rd or 4th etc.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] serialcondition, "second language" means any language other than "first language", which is your native language.

I second [livejournal.com profile] botanik1: novel is роман, not новелла.

But there is a word новелла in Russian, it has some western flavor.
If новелла means the same as роман, why not to use the original word?

Новелла does not mean the same as роман. Новелла is a short story.

Then it should definetely новелла, not роман, because "novel" is also a short story:
A novella is a short, narrative, prose fiction work. Like the English word "novel", the English word "novella" derives from the Italian word "novella" (plural: "novelle"), for a tale, a piece of news. As the etymology suggests, novellas originally were news of town and country life worth repeating for amusement and edification... (http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Novella)

It said "American novel" in the original post, not "American novella". Your link says that novella is a short story, and about novel it just says that it was derived from the same Latin word. Read your own quote carefully.

You are right.
For "novel" Webster has this:
an invented prose narrative that is usually long and complex and deals especially with human experience through a usually connected sequence of events.

Definetely it's a роман.

Please not that in Russian, unlike English, first letter of the words in any titles (excluding the very first word and the personal names) are NEVER capitalized. A very common mistake is to capitalize the names of nations, languages etc. like they do it in English. Correct English: Teaching English; I am a Canadian citizen. Correct Russian: преподавание английского [языка] (NOT Английского); я - канадский гражданин (not Канадский).

There was some correction to item #3, it should be:
Классовые и денежные отношения в американском романе

I sought that "novella" and "novel" are the same, sorry, my mistake.
