How would you use the verbs заставлять/заставить? My vocab definition says "to make someone (do something)". Thanks.

заставить сделать что-то, заставлять сделать

Моя мама заставила нас пообедать.

Учителя заставляют нас делать домашние задания.

Эта новость заставляет задуматься.

заставить - to get someone to do something, either by force or by being insistant.

I forgot the word "compel", it's probably the nearest equivalent but it's more oftenly used than the English word.

I don't think "compel" means quite the same thing. "to force" is probably closer.
