привет! I was wondering if anyone could recommend some movies in russian (preferrably that I could find subtitled in english) popular with teens and twentysomethings. I recently saw the swedish-made film лиля навсегда, and, while it is distinctively european, I was also wondering if movies are styled like this in Russia. спасибо.

here's the short list of recent blockbusters ;)

Брат, Брат-2 - action/arama/comedy, very realistic, but very polytically incorrect =) fun to watch though.
Ночной Дозор - fantasy/action (this one certainly has subtitles on the Internet).
Статский Советник, Турецкий Гамбит - some fresh detective movies.
Goodbye Lenin - a beautiful drama about soviet times in Eastern Germany

I guess it's my bad - I've seen it in russian translation, which sounded very natural =)
you're right, it's in German

Кукущка (http://old.ctb.ru/base/films?oid=23) is pretty good, though in addition to Russian there's a bunch of Sami and Finnish.

-- Hi, what's your name?
-- Эх, пашел ты...
-- Ok Psholty, I am Veikko. Pleased to meet you... :))

Or if you want lots of action, there's always Брат and Брат-2.

I third, or is it fourth?, Кукущка. There is also the Movie called "Russian Ark", it's a movie done in one single long continuous shot, its good but I got kinda dizzy...

What's been truly popular among my friends (and they all are teens and twentysomethings) is a film from 2003, called "The Walk" (Прогулка).
If you just skip the blockbusters and go to the artier ones (and Lukas Moodisson, the director of "Lilya 4-Ever", is definitely arty), then you should try watching those:
- Коктебель
- Возвращение
- Солнце (this one is by Sokurov and wasn't popular at all, but, well, this IS Sokurov)

Speaking of blockbusters, I personally hate most of the films mentioned above (especially those based on Akunin's scripts - the books are SO much better). In my opinion, if you'd like a Russian blockbuster on your screen - go for Бумер or Антикиллер. Both tell stories of bandits (yawn and yawn again) but at least they're twisted and surrealistic in a nice way. Ночной Дозор isn't embarassing though.

Btw, Кукушка is great but requires some local and historical knowledge. Москва Слезам Не Верит is thirty years old and therefore is NOT popular among teens and twentysomethings.

But it is a good film :-)
And it won an Oscar.

Errr.
1) I'm not kicking it in any sense.
2) The poster wants to see movies that are popular among the youth - and that's my point.

You'll be disappointed then. Moodisson is always optimistic - even when telling a story of a prostitute. Russian art-house films are nowadays mostly those moody, hazy existential propositions - or downright insane ones.
And that's the reason why Прогулка stands out. It's optimistic and sunny and beautiful. It is.

a couple of my favs (although I am, ugh, a thirtysomething already):
Не горюй (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123186/)
Кин-дза-дза (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091341/)
by Georgy Danelya
Барышня-крестьянка (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112460/)
by Aleksei Sakharov
Ширли-Мырли (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114429/)
by V.Menshov
Вам и не снилось (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0153489/)
by Ilya Frez
Кавказская пленница (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060584/)
Операция Ы (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059550/)
Иван Васильевич (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070233/)
by L.Gaidai

well.. enough for the beginning I suppose.

These are NOT AT ALL like Lilya 4-ever, but just more or less well known classics or almost classics. If you are really looking for something close to that one, then it should be something more modern.

Goodbye Lenin mentioned below is a beautiful movie but does not have anything do to with Russia except that one of the actresses there is from Russia. The movie itself was made by a crew that was mostly from Western Europe.

I am surprised noone mentioned this before, but...

"Assa" by Sergei Solovyov
http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/movie.html?v_id=119930

It used to be very popular among teens and twenty-somethings.
