Small question:

Is there a "really" that's softer than действительно? Because I feel that if I say "Я действительно не хочу," it would be something along the lines of "I REALLY, honest to God, don't want to." Or am I wrong?

Not quite small! You are right about действительно, but translating `really' - well, that's quite a question. Really ;).

You may also say "я правда не хочу/ я, и правда, не хочу", "я в самом деле не хочу", "я точно не хочу", "я совершенно точно не хочу", but all of them, more or less, mean "I REALLY, with sugar on top and honest to God, don't want to, and leave me alone from now on and forever!" :)

With действительно, it would rather mean something like, "I'm not lying about it, or saying it just to be polite, etc." It's not emotional, it's just an assertion that your words are to be taken seriously.

Otherwise, очень can go with verbs in Russian, so "мне очень не хочется" should be fine. (BTW, one of the first mistakes most Russian kids make when they start learning English is "I very like ..." instead of "I like ... very much". I was no exception.)

You'd need a lot of extra intonation to say that in this way.

you can also say "Я правда\на самом деле не хочу". these probably do sound more neutral in colloquial speech than действительно

Try using words like "серьёзно" or "честно."

"Нет, я честно не хочу." - Honest, I don't want to. Really, I don't want to.
"Честно говоря, я не хочу" or "Вообще-то, я не хочу" - kind of reluctant admission that you don't want to, like, "I don't really want to," "I guess I don't want to."

Also, "Мне не хочется" is a bit softer than "я не хочу" - almost like "I don't really want to" or "I'd rather not." "Мне сейчас не хочется, мне сейчас не очень хочется." - I'd really rather not right now, I really don't feel like it right now.

"Really" is one of those colloquially used terms, almost like "like" that doesn't translate smoothly. But don't use "действительно" :)

Yeah, I think that, funnily, "очень" will sometimes do. I really want to do it = Я очень хочу сделать это.

On the other hand, Я действительно люблю тебя = I DO love you!!!!!!
