I've two small questions.

1) What is "что ли?"

2) What is the difference between "лишь" and "только?" I'm trying to get a feel for лишь but it isn't happening...

1. You should be looking at the uses of the particle "ли" to understand the meaning of the phrase. "Что ли" by itself has no precise meaning out of the surrounding context.
2. "Только" and "лишь" are more or less the same, except "лишь" is less common and more "archaic". In modern Russian, it is only commonly found in set expressions, such as "всего лишь". If you try to use it as a drop-in replacement for "только" you will come off as overly dramatic/poetic. :)

1) что ли perhaps, maybe, or something
2) лишь
1. част. (только) only, just; merely, but
лишь бы он мог приехать — provided that he can come
не хватает лишь одного — one thing only is lacking
лишь в незначительной степени — to only a small extent
2. союз as soon as; the moment
лишь вошел, собака залаяла — no sooner had he entered than the dog began to bark

только
1. ( в разных значениях ) only, merely; (единственно) solely
они только лишь смеются — they do nothing but laugh
только в последнюю минуту — not till the last moment
только поздно вечером — it was not until late in the evening
только за 1994 год — in 1994 alone
только вчера я с ним виделся — I saw him only yesterday
это могло произойти только случайно — it could not happen except by chance
сейчас только два часа — it is only two o'clock now
только попробуй это сделать — you just try to do it
каких только книг он не читал! — what books has he not read!
где только он не бывал! — where has he not been!
ты только подумай — just think
он в ответ смеется, да и только — he just laughs in reply
только что не — almost, practically, all but
только случайно — only by chance
2. only, but
он согласен, только имейте в виду, что —
he agrees, only/but bear in mind that
только? — is that all?
не только ..., но и — not only...but also
если только — if only
лишь только — as soon as;
the moment только и всего — and that is all and nothing more

Yeah, and there's also "Только лишь он оглянулся..." - "As soos as he looked back..."

"Что ли" is something like English "tag questions" (?). It emphasises the question. Ты с ума сошел, что ли? Are you crazy or what?

In the sence 'only' both "лишь" and "только" are identical (though there are some idiomatic constructions where they aren't interchangeable). Stylistically, "лишь" is a bit more formal.

but more colloquial and even rougher.

As "...or what?" in English.

Example:
"Ты дурак, что ли?" -- "Are you stupid or what?"

It is not always rude.
"Пойти поесть, что ли?" ~ "What about having a meal?"/"What if we have a meal?" (not the best analogues but the closest I can think of right now; definitely nothing rude in the original phrase)...
