Russian and Russophile AIM users

A friend of mine recently provided me with this very valuable secret.

Ok, so for those of you who know how to type in Cyrillic and Roman alphabets (and use the shortcut Alt + Shift), and are frustrated with the fact that AIM doesn't support Cyrillic because it ends up showing as vowels with accents, here's a juicy secret:

Go to My AIM - Edit Options - Edit Preferences - Font - Click on Font - Now within this pop-up box, towards the bottom you'll find "Script" and "Western" is selected. Click on the drop-down box and select "Cyrillic" and you'll find that all those vowels are replaced with the actual Russian alphabet.

Ooooooh. But can you still type in English or do you have to manually switch back and forth all the time?

Well, how you normally type in LJ switching from English - Russian, that's how it would be done (I have the shortcut enabled), but as for selecting the font, no you don't need to do that all the time. You will, though, if you want to type in accents for languages such as French/Spanish.

Or, you can ditch the old piece of technology (AIM) and get one that supports unicode: Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/). This allows you to switch from Русский to Français halfway through a sentence if you so desire. ;)
