Шумер = Sumer.

First of all, it needs a preposition, being in a prepositional case.
Second, it means "Inner Sumer" or "Inner Sumerian" (the latter does not make much sense to me, unless it is a complicated metaphor from some piece of poetry)

Well, it's not so funny as it is supposed to be "esoteric"; it contains allusions to some motives that Pelevin uses frequently. The term "Inner Mongolia" is much used in his book "Чапаев и пустота", not meaning the country but some part of human soul in some esoteric sense.

It would be difficult for you, indeed, because of plentiful allusions to various events of Russian history and culture, and the well-known series of jokes about Chapaev and his mates.

I`ll try to explain.
1. The country Inner Mongolia - is not Mongolia, it`s a part of China. So, there is some kind of Mongolia in China, but it`s not Mongolia.
2. If I say "inner blonde", you`ll understand, what it means - my hair is not blonde really, but sometime I act like that girl from jokes. So I say: there is a part of my sole and my mind which make me act as a blonde, so I call it "inner blonde".
Pelevin makes 1+2 - I don`t know what "Inner Mongolia in my soul" exactly means. I`m afraid, nobody knows - even Pelevin.

Until 1900, entire Mongolia was a part of China. It also included Tuva and parts of other Chinese provinces. Then it gradually gained independence but lost Inner Mongolia to China and Tuva to Russia. The state of Mongolia is also sometimes called Outer Mongolia to distinguish it from Inner Mongolia.

Not so long ago, I have seen an ad slogan "Liberate your inner suit". I thought it was rather pelevinesque.

Holy Crikey! I've just spent that past ten weeks in my Russian class studying the Chapaev myth in general and that book in particular. Can't say I'm a huge Pelevin fan, but it's nice to feel in the know.

I think it's quite enjoyable, if you mean the Pelevin's work. My favorite is "Generation P", though. Too bad much of real meat in it is non-translatable...
