Is there some online resourse (either in English or на русском) where I can find out the origins of Russian words? Many good English dictionaries will include a brief description of how the word entered into the language, and I was wondering if there was some way I could get a Russian dictionary that does the same thing. If people could recomment something in print that I could purchase, I'd appreciate the input.

Спасибо!

На русском? Do you mean по-русски?

Vasmer's Ethymological Dictionary of Russian Language. Download or browse online using those links (http://dict.buktopuha.net/data/index.htm#vasmer). Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] solito.

Asa, note that these two ways are not fully interchangeable. По-русски is an adverb (обстоятельство образа действия = adverbial modifier of manner), "на русском [языке]" is "определение" = an attribute. The nouns usually require attributes, while verbs - adverbial modifiers.

Книга на русском (языке) - A book in Russian
Книга по-русски - WRONG
Я ответил ей по-русски - I answered her in Russian
Я ответил ей на русском - I answered her in Russian [language]
Я говорю по-русски - I speak Russian
Я говорю на русском - (though correct, it sounds awkward) I tell [it] in Russian [language]
