I've been searching online for Russian music CDs to buy, but I can't seem to find anything.

I like alternative and pop rock, but I'm open to all genres. Does anyone have any bands to suggest? I'd like to get the Russian language version of the albums, if possible.

Also, I'm having a hard time finding a website that I can order from. I even went to a few of the local music stores here and searched their international section, but walked away empty-handed.

Thanks in advance for your help. =)

Oh! PS. I guess I should've mentioned some of the bands I listen to.

Red House Painters, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, the Cure, Hoobastank, Dresden Dolls, Muse, U2, Our Lady Peace, Marilyn Manson, No Doubt/Gwen Stefani, Garbage, Sarah Brightman, Loreena McKennitt, Louis XIV, Train, Queen, alot of 80s music, and so on. =)

You can listen to Dolphin (Дельфин) and I think you can find his songs free in the internet.

Try Несчастный Случай. They are really quite good, although I don't know if you can call it rock. And if you have a credit card and a mp3-player, you can try to use this site - www.allofmp3.com. I used it for years and never had a bad experience with them, so I'd say they are pretty safe.

Несчастный случай rocks! BTW, you can download all of them free at their site: www.ns.ru. It's one of my favorite russian bands.

I can advice you - Наутилус Помпилиус (Nautilus Pompilius), we also call them (it's group) just Нау (nau). It can be unresting for you.

May be also - звери (beasts). It's quite interesting for peeple who like rock

Actually, one never EVER should learn his/her russian from Рома Зверь. And it's not rock at all.

They're this girlish provincial working-class guitar pop band. And they're really popular at the moment. Crap, if you ask me.

I suggest this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/ref=dp_sr_00/103-3326876-5719831
It's russian folk.

I've got a lot of .m4as, as I'm very much into music. I'd be glad to help - if you're interested, of course.

I guess you'd better try something more contemporary, as Аквариум and Наутилус are fine and dandy, but most of their best work has been recorded around twenty years ago.

So probably you should go for Земфира and Мумий Тролль for starters. And you should definitely try Tequilajazzz - they're probably the best russian band at the moment. Найк Борзов - one of the more adventuruous singer-songwriters. If alternative hip-hop's your thing, try 2H Company, if you like your acoustic ballads and reggae-tinged stuff - it's 5nizza for you. There's a lot of good russian post-rock and electronic music too, mind.

Once again speaking of the 80s, it's obvious that you should try Кино. It's, like, a whole culture.

And don't forget the great Ленинград - although they've got a lot of crap songs, they also have many brilliant ones, so be careful.

This is for starters:
Мумий Тролль - "Морская", "Меамуры"
Земфира - "Прости меня, моя любовь", "Четырнадцать недель тишины"
5nizza - eponymous
Tequilajazzz - "Целлулоид", "Выше осени"
Найк Борзов - "Закрыто", "Заноза"
Ленинград - "Пуля", "Бабаробот"
Кино - "Группа крови", "Звезда по имени Солнце", obviously

Yeah, and for Наутилус Помпилиус and Аквариум mentioned above it'd be natural to start with "Князь Тишины" and "Радио Африка" respectively.

Well, the early hits of Пугачёва are to be certified as classic - she was, like, our own Cher or Streisand or Donna Summer (or all of them - at the same time). In short, there was a period when she was great. But that didn't last for long.

It's really rather amusing that someone hailing from the USA would like ДДТ. I've always thought that they're TOO russian for their own sake. That, and often poor melodically. You should know that they're really unfashionable at the moment.

My advice:
Zемфира
Tequilajazzz
Мумий Тролль
Ленинград (the best way to learn common russian vulgary and slang)

Zemfira(www.zemphira.ru): all 4 albums
Tequilajazzz(www.tequilajazzz.spb.ru): Virus, Celluloid, Vishe Oseni
Mumiy Troll: Ikra, Morskaya
Leningrad(www.leningrad.spb.ru): try to find "the Best" compilation

if you define which US bands you prefer I'll try to narrow the list

Zemfira - reminds of Alanis Morissete, but Z arrangements are more interesting
Tequilajazzz - are rather unique, Smashing Pumpkins chose them to open their only Russian concert, a very solid bass section, very sharp sound...on their web site a lot of mp3...
Mumiy Troll closer to usual pop-rock
Leningrad plays ska-rock, rockabilly

Mumiy Troll -- I guess this group is really something closet to brit-rock :)

They used to sound very Suede, but it was in '97. Now it's adult pop, but with added sexuality and quirkiness.
Somehow, they may be even cooler now.

Mind you, they sound like this: take Cramps, mix them with the Mischiefs and add extra stupidity. Scary stuff. The early albums might be rather interesing, though.

didnt bother to read all suggestions you got - anyway, my suggestions:
Дельфин - dramatic and black, like cure in the early days.
Дети пикассо - they are said to be ethnic but download at their homepage and see that they have chosen a wide interpretation on the concept ethnic http://www.detipicasso.ru/hear.php
Найк Борзов - some downloads http://borzov.ru/mp3/index.php?radi_lubvi
Tequilajazzzzz - also have some downlaods at http://www.tequilajazzz.spb.ru/zzz.php?zzz=jazzz/stre
at least, the band Ва-банкъ has made some good records. today they are maybe a bit old and tierd but once the were the best punk-band. the cds так надо and the cd to victor pelevins tribute is just wonderfully wild!
