How do you use the word "ведь"? Lingvo gave me about six different ways to use it in its translation, including "you see, you know, why, after all, is it not, is it."

I'll try to give you a couple of examples...
Ведь это правда? It's true, isn't it?
Ведь я же сказал ему не делать этого. Haven't I told him not to do that?
- Где она? - Да ведь она ушла. "Where's she?" - "Well, but she has gone."
Да ведь это же он! Why, it's he!

I would say that what the Lingvo gave you was not the exact translation, but the shades of meaning which you could get by using ведь. Just like with the particle "же (http://www.livejournal.com/community/learn_russian/216235.html)", "ведь" kind of emphasizes the sentence, like in:

- Он все-таки поехал туда, а я ведь просила его остаться (Nevertheless, he went there, but I was asking him to stay, didn't I?)

Ведь is in many ways like же - used to emphasize; like же, it can be a parasite word with no particular meaning too. In bad poetry, there are often many же and ведь peppered around to patch the rhythm.

By the way, I seriously suspect ведь is a very reduced form of the verb ведать (archaic for "to know").

Thus, a literal translation of ведь is: y'know :)
