I would say that what the Lingvo gave you was not the exact translation, but the shades of meaning which you could get by using ведь. Just like with the particle "же (http://www.livejournal.com/community/learn_russian/216235.html)", "ведь" kind of emphasizes the sentence, like in:
- Он все-таки поехал туда, а я ведь просила его остаться (Nevertheless, he went there, but I was asking him to stay, didn't I?)
