Yergh... I have my final exam tomorrow and I'm more than a little confused about this subject... I'm clear on when the individual prefixes are used, but I'm confused about what happens to the imperfective/perfective distinction once verbs become prefixed. Can someone explain this to me? I'd be most grateful!

Спасибо большое!

Uh... I can't remember any verbs that become imperfective when prefixed.

No, iterative verbs of motion remain imperfective when prefixed:

ходить (imp.): уходить (imp.), приходить (imp.), ...

Not necessarily. For example, ходить with a prefix is imperfective, but идти with a prefix is perfective. I think that's how it generally works; with a prefix multidirectional is imperfective, unidirection is imperfective. Which seems pretty logical... for once :)...

unidirection is imperfective.

Typo. =P

[livejournal.com profile] soidisantfille, it's actually rather simple. (Hah! First time anyone's said that about verbs of motion.) Multidirectional verbs remain imperfective, and unidirectional verbs become perfective. So you have imperfective/perfective pairs like this:

доходить/дойти

I've yet to see a comprehensive, easy-to-understand introduction to verbs of motion. It seems like textbook writers simply give up. Kind of makes me want to write my own, because at least I know what sort of presentation helped *me* understand them.

Dur. :) At least I said it right the first time... right?

Yeah, there are many different ways of teaching motion verbs and aspect. It's best to find out what way gives you the best results and then stick to it...
