Fyodor Chalyapin was one of the most famous opera singers ever to live. During the Gold Age of opera in the beginning of the 20th century, Chalyapin was the rare exemplary bass in an art dominated by tenors. Chalyapin was a self-taught singer, receiving nearly no formal training, and still managed to be remembered to this day as the archetypical Boris Godunov.
Alive: Dmitry Khvorostovsky (mentioned above,) Zurab Sotkilava, Marina Domashenko. I could also recall the late-Soviet time operatic stars: Galina Vishnevskaya, Maria Bieshu. Elena Obraztsova and Lyubov Kazarnovskaya mentioned above are fine, but I don't like them at all (they both are quite tasteless, IMVVVHO.) Dead: Sergey Lemeshev, Ivan Kozlovsky, Fyodor Shaliapin.

"Here is a singer who simply has it all: A voice of astounding purity, precision and scope, extensive dynamic and tonal range, imagination, insight and wit — all combined with a dazzling charisma that makes it all but impossible to look away when she is performing" — San Francisco Chronicle
