[identity profile] ginapapa.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
Hey! I'm new, and just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Gina and I'm from Bend, Oregon. I'll be moving to Russia (the far east, either Khabarovsk or Vladivostok) with an exchange program for a year, starting at the beginning of August. I've been learning Russian through a textbook and workbook, and it's a big help..But I've only learned writing so far, I need to learn how to speak, and to hold a good conversation with someone.

Anyway, I'm stoked there's a community for this.

Thanks,
-Gina

The far east! That will certainly be interesting. To me, Vladivostok looks like the edge of the world :)

Greetings from the end of the world ;)))

Though I'd rather call it the beginning of the world - the Sun rises here and we are the first to celebrate New Year for example %)))

That's very interesting! And it's also so close to Asia. Pardon my ignorance, but are there many Asian people there?

There are, of course.
Chinese, Korean. Most of them - for work (selling cheep chinese goods or products or building-repairing-etc.), some of them live here. Koreans are much more educated and adapted to the local life and conditions.
And Chinese are mostly on the level "Купи осин дёсыва" and the numbers to say how much is this or that :))

Holding a conversation online isn't a good way...
btw, I'd recommend you cities like Moscow or St. Pitersberg. This will slightly reduce cultural shake and be more interesting for you. Keep in mind that year is a long time....

Bad luck :(
I'm not sure which city is better, I've never ever been that part of Russia.
I think it's too cold there (especially in compare to NW or OR) , but definitely it's not the worst place to go :)
p.s. Feel free to ask/write smth to me.

Going to those cities have their benefits. A lot of times I had to fight to speak Russian for extended periods of time with people. Even my friend's hostmom wanted to practice her English on us. (If she said Вери хат one more time... :) But I hope you're able to make it to Moscow or Petersburg some time, though... they're both amazing cities :)

Good luck! Удачи!

Are you in high school? It'll be tough... the first few months you'll probably have a headache and jawache from listening to and speaking so much Russian :) But it'll be worth it!

I'm sure people will speak English, especially the younger ones, and it might be a nice break, but I doubt as many people will speak English. I couldn't go to a schwarma stand without someone trying to speak English... :)

Vladivostok is not very cold, in fact, not cold at all. It is in the moonsoon zone, and the average temperature there is +5C, exactly equal to this of London, UK. In Khabarovsk it is indeed much colder.

How exciting!! You’ll have a blast wherever in Russia you end up:) my only advice is to keep your reactions to the siberian winter as nonchalant as possible—you’ll win the respect of all the natives;)

Then speaking should be easy... there aren't too many dialoges on here, though. But you might have success with a new messenger contact or something. I haven't found a messenger that supports cyrillic.

Vladivostok is recommended. You'll see the biggest ocean on Earth:), also, the city is surrounded by taiga and some mountains. Looks really nice, or, at least looked so when I was here in 80s.

Oh, how nice! I'm originally from Vladivostok! If I was there now, I'd suggest to meet and such :) I moved to Moscow a year ago, so... But if you have any questions about it, feel free to ask.

Re: с чего вы решили что конкретно "the far east, either Khabarovsk or Vladivostok"

Я правильно понимаю
RE: нет, все зависит от человека "life is what you make it".

Vladivostok is highly recommended! I live in Vladivostok and it's enough interesting and outstanding. Modern, agressive city on the coast of the Japan sea.
