I have a couple of sentences that are troubling me in Russian. It's from an article about football.

Такой вариант если гипотетически и рассматривался, то лишь в политическом отношении.

There don't seem to be enough verbs there.


И, если кто проникся таким убеждением, никакие разговоры о попадании Каряки в крестовину, Мойзеса в штангу, о том, что тянуть в "расписанном" матче с победным голом до 92-й минуты нет резона, таких людей не убедят.

Particularly the проникся bit, and also some help on the footballing terminology would be helpful because the dictionary is limited.

Согласитесь: был бы в наших соперниках, например, "Локомотив" или даже "Шинник", и уступи мы кому-то из них в финале, было бы, конечно, горько и обидно, но, по крайней мере, это не казалось бы ничем сверхъестественным

Particularly the и уступи мы кому-то из них в финале... bit and any observations you may have on that construction.

Even if this variant was hypothetically considered, so [it was considered] only from a political point of view...
(As an editor, I personally would kill the author writing like this, to prevent him from breeding :))

And, if somebody was imbued (filled?) with this conviction, no talks about Karyaka hitting the .... (don't know the soccer therminology - the place where the upper part of the gates meets its side part) and Moyzes hitting the [side part of the gates], and about the fact that there was no reason to delay the victory goal until the 92nd minute in a [????? don't know what расписанный - literally, pre-written or pre-described - might mean in this context] meeting, cannot convince those people [who were filled with that crap described above].

Agree [with me]: if our counterpart would be, for instance, Locomotive or even Shinnik, and should we lose to any of those two, that would be, of course, bitter and humilating, but at least that would not appear something supernatural.

"Расписанный" матч - it means that the result was known before it (the "sport bosses" needed one team to win an the other to loose - so the keeper of the latter had to not catch the ball)

Heh, and I had to cope with two more pages of it.

Is there anything odd about проникся like it being non-standard, or is it just a standard form of an irregular? It's just it doesn't look like a verb and I think the closest I found was the word 'penetrate'.

Проникся is a fairly standard verb: проникнуться, проникаться. A good dictionary should have it (this one (http://www.rambler.ru/dict/) does).

My old Ru-En dictionary (Moscow, Russian Language Publishing House, 1981) gives two variants for проникнуться (imperf. проникаться): be imbued (with), be filled (with.)
Проникся is singular, perf., past tense, 3rd person.

To penetrate is one of the meanings of "проникнуть" (imperf. "проникать".) Note the absence of -ся on the end.

As a matter of fact, I work for the soccer club in question - Krylia Sovetov Samara! "Был бы в наших соперниках, например, "Локомотив" или даже "Шинник", и уступи мы кому-то из них в финале, было бы..." - it is a conditional sentence. You may easily recognise it by the бы particle,sometimes another way of forming a conditional is used - when the verb is put into the form of the second person imperative - УСТУПИ мы им, which means - "and if we had lost to them". The synomnimic form would have been - если бы мы им уступили, which actually was used in the first part of the sentence - был БЫ. It is indeed. Wow, small world. It was the 'уступи' that was bothering me - I have to say that I've been learning Russian for almost 7 years and I'd never come across a conditional like that.

I may be back later with some questions when I type up what I'm doing - stadium names, players, football specific vocab and such-like. I'll just reply with another comment. Thanks.

In Russian verb moods and times can be used figuratively, e.g. imperative in place of conditional (like in this case) and vice versa, present in place of past, future in place of present etc. And they tell us English tenses are bad.

This is another function of Impertaive in colloquial Russian.

Скажи он "да", все бы обошлось - All would have gone well if only he had said "yes".
