I'm new here so um -waves- Hey ^^

Anyway, I've always wanted to learn Russian ever since I was 8 years old. I've always been very interested in the country and the history, almost anything that's Russian. Anyway, it seems every year I try to learn it on my own using various techniques that .. I can't seem to keep up with.

However, next year is my Senior year of high school and my school decided that next year, they will start to offer Russian. But only Russian I. So it didn't take me long to decide to sign up. I thought that getting a head start would be good for my class, but I have one problem. I don't know where to start or anything.

Tips anyway? eh heh ^_^;;

well here's the trick to any new language: don't associate it with english. because it will phenominally confuse you. example: in russian, c = s, h = n, what looks like a d = b, b = v....it gets confusing. try to learn russian as if you've never spoken any thing else in your life. it makes it easier.

Before I begun courses I familiarized myself with the Cyrillic for a few months (my Spanish teacher was most amused I had Russian up and down the margins of the tarea). If you're a perpetually inspired Russophile like me (I too begun when I was eight, and I'm also to be a senior next year. I have a bit of a theory that might explain this coincidence. >>;), then getting it down loosely should take no time at all. I had it within twenty-four or so hours after I got my hands on a book.

I'd love to scan some of the introductory pages from my book for you, as I've done for another of my friends, but as I've since moved and my new scanner doesn't work (damn thee, windows xp), I am unable to do so. If you fish around a search engine for a moment or so, though, something's bound to turn up. Russia may be outwardly obscure when it comes to their [glorious] culture, but the language has had historic prominence (that it's sure to have again, take that, unsuspecting West) enough to give it a bit of a spot.

Anyway, I'm done now.

Russian is pretty much a phonetically spelled language so the first thing to do is to familiarize yourself with the alphabet. From here you can move to simple words and phrases (children grammar or a tourist's aide will go just fine). I think that's enough for the beginning.

Where did you get this userpic with a shoulder-strap supposed to represent Russian military uniform? ;-))

I believe it's from a videogame. My guess is one of the Metal Gear Solid games.

I believe the character's name is Raikov.

I don't understand the joke, sorry.

It's not a joke. The shoulder strap portrayed here was all wrong, that's why I asked and that's why they needed a better consultant :))
Below I wrote:
the shoulder strap (it's Major's) is all wrong - the main field must be dark green, not red; the two thin stripes must be red, not dark green; and the single yellow aluminium star must be in the center of the strap, not near the end :))))

Hmmmm again :)
Raikov is a Bulgarian last name, not Russian. GRU is not army, it's Главное Разведывательное Управление [Вооруженных сил СССР] (General Intelligence Authority of the Armed Forces of the USSR.) And the shoulder strap (it's Major's) is all wrong - the main field must be dark green, not red; the two thin stripes must be red, not dark green; and the single yellow aluminium star must be in the center of the strap, not near the end :))))

That's why I asked :)

Hey, I'm Russian. All Russians are werrry rrrude, mean and baaad, didn't yee know dat? ;-)

To be serious, I'm one of this community maintainers. I'm here to stop mean people from being mean. If I don't sound too polite, it's only because I'm... bingo --- Russian! :)) To be serious again, I'm sick of so-called "political correctness" so I simply call white white and black black... don't take it personal :)))

Should you have any specific language-related or culture-related questions, just go on and ask me -- here or in my journal.

As for the P.C. -- I grew up under the Soviet regime which was all political correctness (after its own fashion, of course.) So I just had enough of that.

get a russian-english dictionary. buy a berlitz beginners russian book. anything with a tape/Cd will help. If you learn the alphabet and the correct pronunciations, you're studies will be pie. and write down everything you read. it helps your brain to remember (this also works for any other language you wish to study. It's helped me learn 2 other languages)

the dictionary will cost you anywhere from $6-20, depending on the size and name. the birlitz beginners book is around $30.

masterrussian.com is a great site. It's helped me with verb conjugation.
