I'm looking for a place I can watch the news in Russian on my computer, preferably with video. Adding to the difficulties is that I use Linux, so RealPlayer and such don't work very well for me. Any thoughts?

We do get ВИСТИ here on the SCOLA channel, but only for a few minutes every day.

"ВИСТИ" sounds Ukrainian, not Russian.

If it's Russian, it must be Вести (http://www.vesti.ru/fotovideo.html), not Висти.

I can't think of any video resources now besides those mentioned above, but what's wrong with radio? :-) There are plenty of stations out there...

Besides that, what problems do you have with RealPlayer on Linux? V. 10 worked OK for me when I used Linux...

jumptv.ru has an extremely reliable НТВ-Мир feed for $10/month. I used it all last summer.

The reason I'm responding to this comment specifically is to confirm that yeah, just do mplayer and then the URL. As long as you have the right codecs, it should take care of itself. Also, you can use mplayer -dumpstream to save the stream. I've done this with Russian movies playing on NTV sometimes, but it has a tendency to crash when doing this on the Mac.

Finally, kudos to [livejournal.com profile] impo4ka for those URLs. I've been looking everywhere for a good feed to ОРТ.

I didn't try it until just now, but no, I can't connect either. It may be that the server is busy or only allows connections from Russian hosts.

"Packet filtered" means someone, either your ISP or (more likely) whoever runs the site you're trying to ping, filters out ICMP packets. A lot of providers have started doing that lately, and it's annoying.

You can watch RTVi here (http://tv.rtvi.ru/pda), BTW. The news isn't great, but you can watch other TV shows. It's only a 56K link, though--I think you have to pay for the faster ones.
