can anyone recommend me some GOOD books on basic Russian? The local librarian ordered this book for me, but it turned out to be a dictionary of Russian literature. I don't think I'll need that until much later. Anything is appreciated!

well i don't know if you have this book in USA but there "Russian in Execises" (yes an english name) and it's originally published by Russky Yazyk Publishers in Moscow but i think it's usually published by another publisher with a "plus" name. so there's é publishers it's by Khavronina - Shirochenskaya and it's awesome. there also from the same publisher a book called "Russian as we speak it". hope i could help...

I found the Teach Yourself Russian book and CD to be a fairly good introduction.

the berlitz self-teacher book is good.

My teacher actually advises against Berlitz. Says they don't really have a feeling for the language, and assumes you know everything already.

One AWESOME AWESOME book is Making Progress in Russian: A Second Year Course, where they explain in detail and have a bunch of exercises on the cases, as well as verbs of motion, etc. It's bloody fantastic, but quite pricy. $70-80 around there.
