(no subject)
Mar. 9th, 2005 09:42 amI was just wondering why they used the причастие in this case using instrumental:
Я сегодня познакомился с человеком, выросшим в моём родном городе.
Я знаю человека, родившегося в этом городе. (ok, this one is genetive)
As I previously thought, when using который, one doesn't use the same case in the independent clause than the dependent clause (at least not always).
Я сегодня познакомился с человеком, выросшим в моём родном городе.
Я знаю человека, родившегося в этом городе. (ok, this one is genetive)
As I previously thought, when using который, one doesn't use the same case in the independent clause than the dependent clause (at least not always).

Date: 2005-03-09 03:41 pm (UTC)When using participles, they always take the case of the noun they are modifying, thereby keeping the case used in the independent clause. Participles decline for the number, gender and case of the nouns they modify.

Date: 2005-03-09 03:42 pm (UTC)Я сегодня познакомился с (кем? instrum case) человеком, (now the participle agrees in case and number with the noun defined, i.e. человеком, which is instrum singular) выросшем в моём родном городе.
In your second example it is not genetive, it's accusative (agreeing to человека) which is occurently a formal homonym of genetive in this situation (due to человек being an animated noun)
What about using который. You could rephrase the previews in the next mode:
Я сегодня познакомился с человеком, который вырос в моём родном городе.
Note that here который is a subject, so it is used in nominative as subjects do in the most cases.
However, который is more commonly used when it is not to be subject in the second clause, e.g.
Завтра я снова увижу человека, с которым познакомился сегодня.
This time с которым is an object and hence it has istrumental (since познакомиться needs an instrumental object)
Thus, the form of который is defined only by its position in the dependent clause, and not by the word, to which the clause is dependent.
