I'm looking for "fake" Russian fonts--Russian fonts where you type in English, but instead of getting Latin letters, you get Cyrillic. So, for example, if I was able to type "Anna" in Latin characters in Photoshop, then select this "Russian" font, it would look like "Анна".

I'm sure there's a technical term for this, but I don't know what it is. I want a font like this so I can use it with Photoshop, which can't handle Unicode (at least not my version).

Edit: I'm not looking for a program or website that will transliterate Latin into Cyrillic; I can already type in Cyrillic. What I need is a LATIN font that just LOOKS like Cyrillic. Photoshop doesn't allow me to use actual Cyrillic, so I can't simply copy and paste Cyrillic into it (I'd get lots of "????").

There's a good one called 'Soviet', which may/may not be what you're looking for (but I sure like it)

and there is a very useful program called Punto switcher - www.punto.ru/switcher. It recoznizes which language you're typing on and automatically switches to Russian or English. I just adore it. But it goes with a Russian keyboard, not instead of it.

Not on the topic, actually, but on this part:
> Photoshop doesn't allow me to use actual Cyrillic, so I can't simply copy and paste Cyrillic into it (I'd get lots of "????").
I'd recommend an approach that sometimes works in this case. If you usually type Russian text in MS Word, try to copy-paste the Russian text into Notepad, and then from Notepad into Photoshop.
If you already use Notepad, try vice-versa - type the text only in Word and copy the text from there.
I'm a Photoshop user myself (not localized version!) and the situation depends on the fonts you use and, respectively, the clipboard format Photoshop expects.

You could type in Cyrillic into Word or something, then press the Print Screen button on your keyboard. That takes a screen shot, which you can paste in Photoshop.

Of course, that prevents you from doing a lot of interesting things you might want to do with the fonts, but it's a good shortcut.

I have Photoshop 5.5 and am able to type in Cyrillic using the Pravda font and setting up my keyboard to switch to Cyrillic using instructions from this site (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/PaulGor/kbd_e.htm).

Try change the Codepage. The next way:
Press Start then Run. Write "regedit" and OK. Choose HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CURRENTCONTROLSET -> CONTROL -> NLS -> CODEPAGE Choose 1252 and press right mouse button. Choose Modify and change 1252 to 1251. Exit. Reboot your comp.

i can explain

This setting will change the 'default' codepage for ansi characters from western-european (like umlauts in German, codepage 1252) to Russian characters (which are located at the same character numbers), codepage 1251.
It mean that when typing in simple programs like notepad and switching to Russian, it will show Russian chars on screen (if font supports it, of course). Photoshop in these terms acts like notepad: it just uses default system chars.
So switching this way to Russian will forbid non-English latin characters in that programs. Switching the key back will restore the situation.

This recommendation is correct, this is the only way to make Photoshop to recognize Cyrillics. This is what all Russian pro designers have to do if they want to use Photoshop. I have used the 5th version and the problem was the same. It has been solved completely by replacing 1252 by 1251. It is not drastic anyway, since you can always change it back.

oh, i see.. not 'symbol,' they're mostly under 'foreign characters.' i'd look in my fonts, but those are on my other computer... there are a couple on this page here:

ah, good to hear. one of them is missing some characters, if i recall, but better than nothing (in programs you can't use real cyrillic characters in). =0)

Если у тебя вместо русских букв пишутся каракули, то запускаем реестр (Пуск-->выполнить-->regedit), меняем параметры в \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Codepage на:
1251 = CP_1251.HLS
1252 = CP_1251.HLS

also, see this ;))

When I used to use Photoshop (long ago), I was able to use a KOI-7 font without any changes to Photoshop and without any updates to the keyboard driver. In other words, only had to add the KOI-8 font to the list of fonts, which is an easy and straightforward procedure. Perhaps recent versions of Photoshop can do it better, I do not know.

Notice: KOI-7, not KOI-8. I am not sure where to get one of these, but it is possible.

An alternative is to use a KOI-8 font, which allows one to combine Latin and Cyrillic characters. These are available from various online sources for free. However, then you would need to have a keyboard switcher installed, with a proper keyboard configuration. One place to read up on this is http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/PaulGor/index_en.htm (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/PaulGor/index_en.htm)

Good luck.
