I was trying to think of how to explain something to one of my friends, but I couldn't think of the right Russian word to go with it. Is there a Russian version of "onomatopoeia", or more specifically, "onomateopoetic"?

Or rather, I'm sure there is a Russian version, that was just my odd Southernly-polite way of asking for it.

onomatopoeia (греч.; сущ.; лингв.)
ономатопея, звукоподражание; звукоподражательное слово

You can use звукоподражание or звукоподражательное слово

I used "Lingvo" - a popular electronic dictionary.

Several examples of onomatopoeia in Russian:

бормотать, курлыкать, мяукать, гавкать, крякать, квакать :)) (to mumble; the following are the verbs that describe sounds produced, respectively, by cranes, cats, dogs, ducks and frogs :))
