[identity profile] violently-knits.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
Hello, hello. My name is Anne.
I am new to this community and to the Russian language. I started to become really interested in languages halfway into grade 9, and Russian is probably the most interesting to me.

I have been trying to teach myself at home, and I mostly use the book Ultimate Russian. It is pretty good, especially for grammar. Unfortunately, I do not own the book so I have to keep checking it out of the library. I think I might just buy the book, not the tapes since that is really the expensive part ($20 // $75), and check the tapes out when I need them.

So, the point of this entry is really only to say, I am new.

Ah, you became interested in Russian around the same time I did. Only I didn't learn much, because I'm a very poorly disciplined young man. That's until I got myself a tutor recently and a REALLY awesome book: Making Progress in Russian: A Second Year Course.

Was it the Bolshevik Revolution? Perhaps Anastasia, that cute but quite accurate for an animated film (except for the fact that Rasputin wasn't really a wizard... and that bats don't talk)? Well it was for me.

The books in USA are so expensive... In Russia we pay usually 2-4 Dollars per book:-) I know, that our life-level is not too high, but we can buy books often...
If you have any troubles in learning Russian, I'll be very glad to help you! I hope my help will be useful for you - cause I'm native speacer of Russian:-). Do you use electronik Dictionary? Something like our Lingvo?

my advice on the books: if there are any used bookstores around, check to see if they have any foreign languages stuff (a long shot sometimes, but I've made some good finds, including a lot of books I'm quite unable to read at this point. lol.). Also, sometimes places online like ebay might have used or cheaper books (haven't bought anything in Russian online myself, but have found great deals on books in German on ebay).

>I usually look for foreign language books wherever I go, but I usually only find books in Spanish.
>but mostly they sell novels, not teaching books.

Did you check your public library? Ours has quite a good selection of Russian books.
