Previet!
I'm just joined, so I thought I would introduce myself.

My name is Michelle, and I'm a highschool student in Florida. My dad is from Odessa, and although my mom learned Russian in college, they never taught it to me. My grandfather taught me to read Russian, but otherwise my knowledge of the language is very limited. I've tried using various resources to help me learn more, but the only ones I've come across are geared for those who cannot read Russian, or those who have never been exposed to it. If someone could recommend a self-study course book that might be more useful to me in my situation, that would be great!
Thanks!

That's the worst thing to do, to spell Russian phonetically, since Russian and English phonetics are way too far from each other. I've seen many things like "hastawrojnaw" (осторожно) - none of which were any close to the original pronounciation. It's really good to study Cyrillic letters from the very start and to write in Russian using Cyrillics, otherwise you end up mixing up both English and Russian pronounciation, which does no good to both of them :)) Since you can read Cyrillics already, it's really useful to use them instead of Latin lettes, at least when you write in the language which natural alphabet is Cyrillic :)))) This way you'd learn faster and make less mistakes from the very start. Hey, I wonder what I'd do if I'd use Cyrillics for studying English! :)))) Дат'лл би а найтмер, райт? ;-)))))

If you're running WinXP all possible international fonts are already there, you only have to enable it (Control Panel/Regional Settings.)

in your variant 'i' is in an open syllable, so it also has nothing to do with 'private' ;)

Ummm... I can't really recommend any, since I've never needed one, but if you have any particular questions, feel free.

Oh, and welcome. :)

Welcome to the club, and feel free to ask anything you may want to know :) We have enough native speakers and advanced learners here to clear up most of linguistic and/or educational questions you may have :))

don't forget аще, афигеть and others :-))

Anyway, this might be of some use. I've got many foreigners in my contact list, and this really helped me with, for example, my Spanish. I never hesitate to ask if I don't understand anything. But the difference is that Europeans don't use phonetical equivalents of words as often as Russians do :-)))

Russians? Haha! My first ICQ pal, back in 1998, was from Australia, and her very first message to me got me stunned for a good while: it was something like
hithere wazzup? im jess izit cold in russia rite now?

:))

It all looks like sms which write to my american friends. Just to spare time, you know. Because thumbs get tired when the words are typed correctly :-))
