I am just starting to learn. Well, I actually havent started yet but I really want to. The language is just so interesting. Does anyone have any recommendations for beginners to self-teach themselves?

I've been using the Pimsleur Russian series to self-teach. I also learned the alphabet from stuff I found on the web. And I have the added resource of a Russian friend (and her family) who help me when I have questions. I've learned about half of my Russian from their kids, who are 2 and 6 and think it's funny to help me with my pronunciation.

The Pimsleur series is pretty expensive so I'd recommend trying to get if off of Soulseek or IRC or alt.binaries.world-languages or Kazaa.

I've heard Rosetta Stone is also very good. Unfortunately, I use Linux and it won't work for me.

i think the above is good and just familiarizing yourself with the words as u go along..but one little piece of advice:

you typed Драствутье ...when its really Здраствуйтье (i may have possibly spelled it wrong but the pronunciation is zdras-voo-ee-tee-ye

i dont even think i have the right to correct anyone, me being an american learning russian haha

It's actually Здравствуйте, but the first в is not pronounced.

And there is no "tee-ye" at the end, really. :) It sounds like "te" in "Texas", with little softer "t".

I would definitely recommend Pimsleur Russian to begin with. It'll ingrain some good pronunciation in you. Then I'd suggest a book & CD course such as Hugo's Russian in Three Months or Colloquial Russian.

I seriously do NOT recommend The Rosetta Stone series. You spend more time clicking buttons than actually doing anything. I found that once I was away from the computer, I couldn't remember anything!

Also, I would definite recommend that you go to Russian classes, even for just one term. You need a lot of feedback at the beginning, so just do a very short Russian course, one of those 'false beginners' course for people who can read Cyrillic slowly and can meet & greet. I wouldn't recommend going to comeplete beginners classes because you're wasting your money! You can learn all the most basic things by yourself with Pimsleur Russian.

Also, Modern Russian 1 is an excellent book & tape set to use, except that you can only get secondhand copies from Amazon these days because it's no long in print. If you do get this brilliant book, I can give copies of the recordings that accompany the book :-)
