I was in a Russian forum and someone wrote, "пажалста" instead of "пожалуйста". Are those two different words for saying "please"? Or it is mispelled?

It's a trendy (or wannabe-trendy) pseudo-misspelling, like "pleez" or something of the sort in English.

"пажалста" is a phonetic spelling (which is not correct, but can be intentional, they way people use "ничё" instead of "ничего". Or, as much as it pains me to say so, it can simply be misspelled. A lot of people don't have a good grasp of orthography, be it in Russian or in English, and even those who do are often sloppy when writing online.

I'd assume it's like "dunno" instead of "I don't know." Пожалуйста is certainly PRONOUNCED like пажалста...

plenty of... like in english.
пасиб(о) instead of спасибо
патамучта - потому что

u see there exist several types of misspelling: common, clinical and translitirated (my humble theory)
clinical misspellings
не пайдиот - не пойдет
атцтой/атстой - отстой

there are also transliterated misspellings
Сенькую от thank you
плизз от please

Many people misspell what they write - intentionally. Have you never seen something like "dis iz coz I luv ya?" This is the case.

пожалуйста may be also "misspelled" as пжлста (this variant is used mostly in icq and other programs when you have to type fast)

A cross between the common and clinical categories is "щастье" = "счастье".

The problem is that it's the way YOU would say it, which is not ultimate truth.

Soviet style of communication

*grin*

Somehow that reminds me of the story about the 5 кочерёг...5 кочерг...5 кочергов.... ах, 2 кочерги и 3 кочерги.

All those examples are quite recent. Compare with more "classical" examples (that you could find in late soviet novels):
щас (сейчас),
ваще (вообще : Ну ты ваще),
дык (так as a discourse connector)
The difference with пажалста, патамушта / патамучта and пайдиот is quite striking: in the latter, the spelling doesn't reflect any phonetic phenomenon. It's a pure game based on different ways to write a word (see also есчё: kids may write this for еще, a adults sometimes do it quite consciently).

Is it? With Putin we all probably need to reopen our old diaries and recall how it was... I think we're not that far now from Soviet Union.

Труп просто плохо закопали... :(
