A geography question
Nov. 26th, 2004 08:08 pmA relative of a friend of mine wrote to me that she is adopting a baby from a place called "Kubyshev" but cannot find it on any map. I looked around yandex for a while, and all I can find is Куйбышев, which sometimes is followed by (Самара). Was Куйбышев the Soviet-era name for Самара?
Thanks in advance :)
Thanks in advance :)

Загорск -> Сергиев Посад
Чкалов -> Оренвург
Орджоникидзе(ორჯონიკიძე) -> Владикавкас

And if we look broader, not only on Russia's map but also on the former Union's, we find that Душанбе was once Сталинабад, Bishkek was once Фрунзе, and so on.
