Does a Russian equivalent to the English expression "5 o'clock shadow" exist? Or would I just have to use щетина as a substitute?

Also, in the same vein, which sounds better: лицевые волосы or волосы лица?

And if you wonder why: the word "лицевой" is never used in the meaning "facial" (if only in the medical context). In regular speech it means something rather like "frontal".

For example, лицевой счёт.
It's not the frontal one at all.
It means - account that ones possess.

«Лицевой счёт» is an idiom of the banking jargon. In fact, all possible uses of this word I can think of are quite specific and rarely used in usual speech.

In this particular case the stem «лицо» means “a person”, not a face that is the frontal part of a head.

If I hear «лицевые волосы», it does make me think about medicine or zoology. On the other hand «волосы лица» makes me wonder what you mean. Eyebrows? If «щетина» is what you want to express, both ways are wrong.

"5 o'clock shadow" would be "вечерняя щетина", though it's not as common as the English expression.

"Волосы лица" is marginally better than "лицевые волосы", but the correct form would be "волосы на лице".

It's better say "растительность на лице" (plants on the face) becouse "волосы" is better for long hair. IMHO

That's right, but Russian language doesn't use this as a regular expression :) It's far better to say "борода и усы" :))
