Hey Everyone!

So I have forgotten most of my Russian and am hoping this community will help me get back up to speed.. In the meantime, can anyone help me with the most commonly used Russian for "Bravo!" or "Encore!"? I know it seems an odd request, but I am dressing as a Tsar for a fancy dinenr theatre tomorrow which has many Russian acrobats performing and would like to be able to add those phrases to my vocab before then! :) Thanks in advance...

it's just «Bravo».

Bravo! is браво! but Encore! is бис! (a request to repeat the performance). The latter does not seem to be used as extensively as it used to be.

Sometimes, e.g. on rock concerts, simply "ещё!" is used instead of classical "бис".

btw note the stress falls on the 1st syllable: браво.

About the slang phrase you mentioned and which I'm not going to cite here, it had been just the last syllable of the word, and it had had the soft sign (ь) at the end.

mostly since I first heard it in the context of a slang phrase for "F'ing cool"

Maybe the word you're thinking of is заебис... ;-)

i had a russian teacher who would always say "Urah!" (with the accent on the second syllable).

"Ура!" is better for "hurray" not for "bravo". the words are different in English and so they are different in Russian
