Anyone wanna help me out and give some Russian curse words? I realize now that I can be polite in Russian, but I can't curse a person out. I can even do it in Japanese, and I don't speak Japanese as well as I speak Russian, which is sad lol. Thanks ^_^

"иди на хуй" (idi na huj) or "пошел (пошла F.) на хуй" - a person will be cursed out;)
"отъебись" (ot'ebis)

Hmm, I always understood "fuck off" exactly as "отъебись". The meaning is the same.

And "иди на хуй" is more like "go to hell" (rougher though).

It's funny when somebody asks about curse words there are dozens of people who'd like to help :)

Take care, though - curse words in Russian are much stronger than their English counterparts. In fact, all of the textbooks and teachers I've had have emphasized that it's fine for us to learn cursewords as long as we never, ever use them ourselves.

Especially if we're female (apparently, it's much more shocking for a woman to curse than for a man).

Why, a foreigner using Russian cusswords is ever so funny. I remember one of my co-workers taught an American guy the Russian word "жопа", lying that it means "hello". So this American went from cube to cube and exclaimed "ЖОПА!" with a happy face. Noone at the company could work for the rest of the day.

Hmm. Are there curse words in Russian that are more equivalent to their English counterparts?

There was many talk-talks about "Oh, shit!" and "Fuck you!" in a movie translations. It's too hard to the family viewing. But all-the-people know "мат", the really curse words. There was a big difference between a cultural and popular language.

Uhhh.. for precise meaning:
Fuck - ебать
Fuck you - ёбты
Fuck off - отъебись
Shit - дерьмо
You suck - отсоси

There's no exact equivalents for "motherfucker" or "screw you" (ебать is definitely stronger).

Any other curses to translate?

By the way - are English curse words connected with religious concepts stronger than those connected with sex, perversions, etc.?

I somehow got the impression that they are; in Russian it's opposite - you can swear using "бог", "черт", "дьявол" etc., as much as you like - and it won't be considered obscene, but rather old-fashioned and literary, while something like Owwwl has metioned above is absolutely taboo (that is, not exactly absolute *LOL* - only with children or women present and in formal situations).

No, it's actually the opposite; in English, "religious" curse words are pretty tame. You can say "damn!" or "God!" in public these days without shocking anyone - and they're common in the media. They're hardly even considered curse words.

It's words connected with sex or bodily functions that are stronger: fuck, shit, etc.

But English curse words really don't shock anyone anymore, even if the stronger ones still can't be said in the classroom or on primetime TV.

There are a lot of euphemisms like "блин!" instead of "блядь!", or "хрен" instead of "хуй". They sound more harmless but give a hint of curse. They are used widely by native Russian speakers, but a speaker is still expected to understand well when they are appropriate.

I dont think so, it's just a common hypocrisy. Must be inheritance of Soviet puritanism. When i watch "Sex & City" and hear "I'm fucked up" being translated as "Я озадачена" - i feel like i'm fucked up myself. Oh boy.

Opinion: Right offensive russian words are non curse. They are usual but appropriate to the situaton.

Russian is different from many languages in that it has curse nouns not only for "bad people"(**cker) or "bad things"(*hit), but also for "bad situations". The most used one is "пиздец", another one is "жопа".

So, if you don't like what's going on, you can say: "Это пиздец".

I don't know how accurate, weird or very creative any of these are. They're a laugh, though.

Translation of curse words

From: [identity profile] nasa-sina.livejournal.com
There is a russian independent film translator Dmitry "Goblin" Puchkov. He is famous for his right translation of curse word expessions in various american films to russian. Other translators almost always translate "fuck off" into "иди в жопу" (literally it is a much weaker curse then "отъебись"). Goblin says that it is wrong because when a gang guy curses another gang guy he will obviously use much stronger words and expressions. So if you want to learn adequate and strong russian curse expressions you should check out Goblin's translations - some of them are freely available on his site (http://www.oper.ru) - if someone is interested I can post here direct links to mp3 from there (site is in russian).

You can watch a movie with original sound and then analyse Goblin's translation of those rough episodes.

Also Goblin nearly perfect translates meaning of any dialogue. So it seems to be useful not only for studing curse words.

Yes! Goblin does some good work. The image collection there is also rather entertaining -- http://oper.ru/gallery/list.php?div=103&page=0
