Continuing with colors, I came up to purple -- пурпурный. My dictionary puts stress marks on BOTH the y's... so, is it ПУРПУРный?

it means you should stress it as either пУрпурный, or пурпУрный. Both correct, but the latter is more common

Что, правда? А я всю жизнь говорила пурпУрный. И даже не слышала не разу первого варианта. Чорт, вот так живешь-живешь, на русском языке говоришь и не знаешь.

your are not quite correct, i think.

if we say пУрпур (noun) the first У is stressed. but as for пурпУрный (adjective), we must always stress the second syllable.

ask http://gramota.ru if you do not belive me :)

I did it yesterday, in fact. it says:

Орфографический словарь: прпрный
Словарь трудностей: ПРПУРНЫЙ и ПУРПРНЫЙ.

so what? one can find both in dictionaries, one being rare. My very point was you don't have double stresses.

well, if you want your russian to be typically russian you'd better say пурпУрный :)

I'm afraid, the dictionary is not accurate. The colour Americans used to call purple is фиолетовый in Russian. Пурпурный is crimson.
