Well it's been a while since I posted but nonetheless I still have a barage of questions.

What is the difference between подруга and друг; and тоже and также; and здесь and сюда; теперь and сейчас?
When I read Russian text before, I used to read "I have a brother" as "у меня брать" but now that I'm with another book, it says "у меня есть брать." Are both correct? And when is another instance in which you would use ecть?
What is мне нужно and мне нравиться in the past tense? I know they're adjectives but is it possible to express that in the past?

подруга = female friend
друг = male friend

тоже and также are pretty much the same

здесь is used for expample when you want to say "I am here" and сюда is used for "Come here" but they both mean here.

No, it is "такой же" which means "the same". "Тоже" is a synonym of "также".

There is also "так же ..., как и", that can be translated like "as ... as":
Я говорю по-английски так же плохо, как и по-немецки -- I speak English as bad as German :)

Oh, please, don't mix that up... “Также” and “так же” are different. “Также” means “also”. “Так же” means “as... as” and is used only within the expression “так же... как и...”

As far as I know:
подруга is used for females.
тоже is used after the word that you're including. Me too! Я тоже! But также is used before you start listing the other things you want to include. Also, I like milk. Также молокро мне нравиться.
I think сюда is used when you use motion verbs. Come here, etc.
Not sure about the есть thing. I think they're somewhat interchangeable, but it might depend on context.
And нравиться is not an adjective. It's a verb. What you're literally saying is "Milk pleases me." So you can put that in the past tense easily, нравился. For мне нужно I think you'd just add было.

Of course, I may be wrong on parts of these, so anyone should feel free to correct me. =)

And don't forget with нравиться that the past tense is influenced by the gender of the thing that pleases you. Also, нужно as an adjective instead of an adverb is dependent on gender.

As far as I'm aware, мне нужно literally means "[it is] necessary for me..." so, in past tense, I would assume you'd say мне было нужно or something along those lines...

I'm fairly sure as far as the у меня [есть] брать thing that есть is only for emphasis... i.e. I have a brother.

Not брать, but брат. Брать means to take. :) У меня есть брат is correct. Another - в этом есть смысл, у меня есть идея, в доме есть лестница, etc.

Ax! I always and am still doing that mistake. Whenever I see брат is just seems incomplete.

you can use есть as the verb - eat- and - to be-
мне нужно in the past tense is - мне было нужно
мне нравится in the past tense - мне нравилось
and if you want to say " I like it"= мне нравится- without "ь".

There are common rule in Russian language about тся and ться.
You shod ask yourself question about word:
- Что делает? - Нравится (Мне нравится эта кружка)
- Что делать? - Нравиться (Я хочу ему понравиться)
If the question end with ь you should use ться.

he-he :) девство is an old word for virginity :)) You probably mean детство, childhood?
Играть в футбол - always! Играть в прятки (play hide-and-seek,) играть в карты (play cards) BUT играть роль (play a part - about an actor.)
also, фильм is of male gender in Russian, so мне понравился фильм, NOT понравилось.

When you say that someone has something you usually use "есть": "у тебя есть ручка", "у меня есть план" etc.
"Есть" can be omitted in rare situations when using spoken language and/or when you don't have time to say it. E.g., "у него пистолет!" ("he's got a gun!").
You also use "есть" when you'd use "there is" in English. E.g., "на передней панели есть регулятор громкости" ("there is a volume control on the front panel"), "есть ли жизнь на Марсе?" ("is there life on Mars?") etc.

Present: Мне нужно (нужен, нужна); мне нравится.
Past: Мне было нужно (был нужен, была нужна); мне нравился (нравилось, нравилась).

I have a brother — у меня есть брат. (only)

Сейчас and теперь are both “now”, but сейчас is just time indication, while теперь is usually used to oppose something in the past, like: Раньше он был белый. Теперь он чёрный.
