[identity profile] wordsofstealth.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
zdrasvuitye every one, my name is abraham and i am relatively new to this community, been a member for a while, but have never posted anything. so i thought i should introduce myself.

i started learning russian in venezuela a year ago. "useless" my friends said, but i had fallen in love, and i didnt care. perhaps someday i would meet a russian and use it.

i did, i moved to miami, and theres a lot of russians here, so i could the minuscule amounts i know into some use.

meanwhile, IM DESPERATE ive been trying to find a place where i can learn some russian, but it seems like the only way to learn here is to have russian parents. library books only help u so much before becoming tedious. [if anyone knows anywhere in the miami area]

how do you say platypus in russian?

do svidanya

Hey, I live in Miami too and I haven't see the "lots of Russians" that you are talking about lol. What area do you live in? I'm also kinda frustrated about not having places to learn Russian here.

Are you freaking kidding me!? I'm in Miami as well! Oh this is so cool. We simply must form a Russian Learner's Club or something. Anyway, I think the Russians he is talking about live by Miami Beach/South Beach/one of the beaches. Not to mention they live somewhat in the northern part of Miami. I remember going to a Russian bakery/cafe in Hollywood, but I was too shy to order in Russian. I also remember drinking a drink called Росинка, or something to that effect.

Oh I live in the Kendall area, so I dont' go to those beachs too much (usually go down to Key Biscane and that area when I go to the beach lol). And yes, we will have to start up the Russian Learner's Club or something. How old are you two?

I'm 16 going on 17 on the 20th. I actually don't live too far from you either. I live in Hialeah Gardens and it's just like 5 minutes from the Palmetto, which is like the most useful highway I've encountered thusfar. E-mail me, you two, if you're interested in doing something before school starts once more. I'm not sure whether or not I'm going to be able to pursue Russian during the school year, although I did sign up for a DE class at MDC which is Elementary Russian I, but it's a credit by examination course so... enough of me boring you...

Wait they have DE with Russian? If I'd have known that I'd have signed up lol. What school do you guys go to? I go to Killian. I'm turning 17 in Nov.

I'm a MASTie. Yes, they do have Elem. Russian I and II as a DE course, but since it's a credit by examination only course, there's no formal classes. Sort of like independent study. You also need to get an override by one of the people at MDC. This course is only offered at the Wolfson Campus, though. Don't worry, you still have time to sign up for the fall semester.

Ahhh Wolfson is too far for me though, which is sad. I live really close to the Kendall Campus, and pretty far from downtown. I'm thinking of just leaving actual class Russian for college. I take it you are going into your junior year? I have a friend that goes to MAST. You might know her.

Senior. I'm one of those people that since birthday's are right before the school year starts, I'm in the other grade and such. Kinda sucks because now they're pushing back the start of school date, and I'm a senior at 16 and probably going into college at 17. It's just a difference of one year but still feels odd.

I'll be in Los Angeles and New York in the following weeks. Any areas/neighborhoods the best for seeking out Russian culture?

I live in LA and by far the best place for Russian goings-on is in West Hollywood -- I'm sure there are communities in the suburbs, but if you're speaking about LA proper, that's it. Try not to be misled if you go, though, because West Hollywood is also the gay district. So every other shop has a rainbow flag, or a name in cyrillic. I think it's cute. It's on Santa Monica Blvd around Doheny.. and the surrounding area, of course. Lots of cute bakeries and video stores and the ilk.

mmm.. platypus=duck-bill?

If you're serious about learning Russian, you'll have to spend money. It isn't fun to part with your money, but it's necessary to have some learning materials, like textbooks and tapes, which you can order in. Since there are native speakers in your area, you might not need a textbook that comes with audio, if you know someone who would be willing to help you with your listening comprehension and pronunciation.

Anyway, I can't recommend any specific learning materials since I'm learning through a course, but if you ask for recommendations, the members of this community will probably have some.

The four books I've learned most/all of my Russian is: 501 Russian Verbs, Master the Basics: Russian (Barron's), My First 1000 Russian Words (yes, it is a children's picturebook), and Essential Russian (Berlitz). The most useful book thusfar has been the Berlitz and the Barron's, and I was speaking with my counselor about languages and she also mentioned how good Berlitz is as a language learner company thing as a self-teaching program. Of course, you have to be a natural linguist, have a passion for languages, and a want of immersion.

did a quick google on this -- since I'm interested in getting beginner lessons myself! -- and found the embassy here in DC has a center and an associated 'friends' of the center. here are some links, which might possibly lead to other centers in the U.S.
