I remember coming across Russian text once, and I came across the odd "жж" word. I tried translating it, and sorry but I can't provide the sentence I found it in because I forgot. What does "жж" mean, exactly?

And on the subject of double letters, words such as более and менее, are those last two e's pronounced as just one e or distinguished e's?

[EDIT]: Forgive me, everyone. I just found the text that I was talking about. Perhaps I was thinking of both ЖЖ and ж at the same time. Here it is:

"Ты сказал мне: "Ну что ж, иди в монастырь
или замуж за дурака..."

It's a line from one of Анна Ахматова's poem: Читая Гамлета

жж = журнал жизни

более and менее pronounced separately, as u said distinguished e's.

bo-le-e, me-ne-e

PS длинношеее - long-necked, three e's :)

we translate "LiveJournal" as "Живой Журнал"
So LJ = ЖЖ

Either it was an imitative word for bee's buzz, or - an abbreviaion that stands for LiveJournal (Живой Журнал = ЖЖ) in Russian. :-)

"Ее" is pronounced not only as distinguished e's, but with a "й" between them, that is - "болейе"/"менейе".

Or maybe you saw the word "ж"? That's an abbreviated form of "же", which is sort of an emphasizing word.

Bottom line: you got to give us the context when you ask questions like that.

- Жжжжж, - прожужжал в ответ на этот пост жук и улетел.

ЖУЖЖАТЬ, -жжу, -жжишь; несов. Производить однообразно дребезжащий звук,
свистящий шум. Жужжит в паутине муха. Пули жужжат над головой.

I'm late to give the answer itself, so I'll just add some more onomatopoeic words. :-))

Кошка: мяу-мяу!
Корова: му!
Петух: кукареку!
Лошадь: иго-го!
Лягушка: ква-ква!
Свинья: хрю-хрю!
Часы: тик-так!
Паровоз/пароход: ту-ту!

There are much more, of course - these are just a few of them. :-)

Well... I don't think that "болейе"/"менейе" is the right pronunciation or transcription of the words более/менее.
"Е" itself is a combination of 2 sounds "й" and "э".
So the phonetic transcription will be something like this:
б-[б]
о-[о]
л-[л'] (it's a soft consonant because of "e")
е-[э]
е-[й]
\[э]

You are absolutely right. At first I just thought somehow that it would be confusing. *LOL* Now I see that it's not. :-)
