What's your favorite Russian word? It can be your favorite because of how it sounds, because of what it means, or for a completely different reason. I'm just curious.

I don't have a favorite, but возможность comes to mind as very pretty and fun to say.

Edit: We have some members using curse words in the comments to this entry, so you may not want to read them if you're in a public place where it could get you in trouble. (I'm leaving the comments up.)

I've always been fond of the negative question words lol, just cuz they are fun. I especially like никогда lol.

I rather like "shutka" (joke). Something about the word just sounds so right :) I also like negative words/phrases too. "Popugai" (parrot) just makes me laugh.

My favorite word is взлёт, because, seriously, three consonants plus a palatal semi-consonant [vzljót]? It's just so completely un-English; I love it!

If anyone knows any words that have (God forbid) even more consonants in the beginning of the word, I'd love to know them.

Off topic but...

There's a Czech phrase that has no vowels in it whatsoever.

Something like (sorry, no accents):

strc prst skrz krk

It means "stick your finger down your neck" or somesuch.

Apparently Franz Kafka's Czech female "friend" (eh hem) used to taunt him with that phrase, because as a German speaker he had no chance of pronouncing it :)

This reminds me of an article from The Onion:

"Clinton Deploys Vowels to Bosnia"

There is an indecent word взбзднуть, which means to give out a little fart, and which has, it seems, the longest continuous string of consonants in a plain Russian word. I am afraid though that, like other excurses to the periphery of the language, this comment may be deleted by those who delete comments.

Well, 'r' is a semi-vowel in Czech (as well as Serbian, unless I am mistaken).

I also like the word "popugai". It reminds me of Papageno from Mozart's The Magic Flute. Always helps me remember, although it also makes me wish parrots came up more in my limited Russian class conversations :)

Well, there's the word 'vzglyad', which means 'to have a glance'.

I also like the word 'nechego' (nothing), well, at least that's how I think it's spelled in transliteration.

Oh, I forgot to mention that my favourite Russian word is 'morozhenoye' (ice cream). In fact, that's my ebay ID ^__^

Ahhh, so close. I thought that "a" looked misplaced. Thanks for the correction.

Oh. I can't believe I forgot how to say this word, but I loved the word for the spots of light that are reflected from mirrors or windows when the sun hits it. I think it literally meant sun rabbits. I just think that's a pretty image.

С переприподвыпертом :)

Honest, never thought about it 8) Though, come to think of it-- I do love the sounding of all kinds of fluffy nouns (e.g. feline names) and adjectives.

Keep in mind that "nechego" and "nichego" are quite different words :) but in most cases they both mean "nothing" :)

You may add a prefix to it and make it контрвзбзднуть, though I'm not sure if it makes any sense this way :))
