Finally got a Russian Learn-By-CD program, and it raised a few questions (before I actually have listened to the CDs).

I always assumed that ть was pronounced like English th... but is it, or is it just an aspirated t?

The pronounce of "ть" is presented in most languages as "t'".
It's softer than "th".
When you spell "t" your tongue touches high part of your mouth (don't know the translation of this organ :).
When you spell "ть" your tongue touches lower part.
Take your tongue up and press on teeth. It's "t". Put your tongue down and press on teeth. It's "ть".
Same system for "l" and "ль" etc.

The ть is like the first part of the British pronunciation of the word 'tube'. Americans says something like 'toob' and we say something like 'tyoob', so ть is something like the 'ty-' in 'tube'... hope that makes sense!

The way I imagine it to be articulated is like this: you say the 't' sound and end it with your tongue in the position of the letter 'y' as in 'yellow'.

Like "t" in tee. Soft.

"Tube" works also.
