i am unable to write in cyrillic on livejournal, though it is possible on yandex and myspace. i don't know why. for this reason i have to write the word i have a question about in latin....fishka....my belarussian friend said it and wasn't able to give me an example. does anyone know the meaning of this slang word? or any other useful slang words?

yes, as i can use it on other websites. i can read cyrillic on live journal, but i type symbols. i chose cyrillic on some options page with no outcome.

Фишка is, literally, a chesspiece or a token. As a slang word, it has multiple meanings. I would dare to compare it with the English word "thing" or "vibe". "Those new rock musicians were playing their own thing"... "они играли эту свою фишку"... "This place has got the vibe!" - "у этого места есть своя фишка!" "You know, the thing is..." - "Знаешь, фишка тут вот в чем..."

I have heard фишка as a slang word some good 20 years ago, long before all that computer slang like "фича" :))

In general, slang word “фишка” is used to point out some clearly distinctive feature of something or someone. When it comes to a person’s description, that word can be used to point out some detail of character, rather than physical feature. I.e. being very tall is not “фишка”, but being very polite or communicative to everyone, from closest friend to complete stranger, clearly is.

I don't have Cyrillic enabled on my computer, so I type stuff in on translit.ru and then copy and paste it. That may be too much trouble for you, but if nothing else works it's a last resort.

Or this can mean something like "a special feature" as well.
This makes me also think that this word has something to do with "feature".
