A friend from Moscow I emailed, asking for a bit of help with Russian.. emailed me back, but of course Yahoo mail displays all the Cryllic characters as Äæåéñîí, ???, etc. Is there something that I could download that would allow me to read this email with the Cryllic fully intact? Thanks.

I use a thinger called Otpad (http://www.ingenit.com/otpad/) It allows you to copy and paste and convert back and forth between different encodings. It's really useful. It also has a feature where you can type in American/English letters and it puts it into Cyrillic for you by using transliteration. I think that link should work.

if you're using windows, you can go into
the settings menu and set up regional
options so cyrillic is shown. then you
can also type in russian with a ctrl + shift
click :)

You're a genius! Do you happen to know how I get the the "regional options"?

go to start menu. go to control panel.
you'll see a globe icon with regional
options. click on the tab for 'input
locales' and start adding.

that should work, but you might have to
fiddle with it...i've had it set up a while
and don't remember exact details.

If you use Microsoft Windows, they all come with the standard language package. I don't remember how exactly it works, but using original Windows installation disk, you can make your system recognize cyrillic type in Word processor and Internet Explorer (in some cases, when you are in IE, you might want to change encoding to Cyrillic (Windows) or Cyrillic (KOI8-R) or other from Explorer's "View" drop down menu - depending on how the pages are encoded...) Anyway, this will only give you the ability to read Cyrillic. If you want to be able to type Cyrillic, there is a great program called "Cyrillic Keyboard" made by Fingertip Software, Inc.
I am using "Cyrillic Starter Kit" - ordered it a bunch of years ago from www.cyrillic.com
Anyway, ask someone to help you figure that language pack for you system.
Good luck!

Reading is easy; usually just select the proper encoding from the menu (something like View, then Encoding, then Cyrillic, then one of those).

Writing is somewhat more involved to set up, but just as easy to use. Instructions for setting up are available online (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/PaulGor/index_en.htm).
