I'm having very very bad problems with spelling. I don't know what else to say. My spelling is horrible!!! And it's quite annoying when I'm talking to people online. (I only talk to two people and one understands english.)

Does anyone have spelling problems besides me? Also, I barely know how to talk to people in Russian. I talk with my parents whenever they need to say something to me. It's not very casual...

I was wondering if there's a site or something with all the rules that apply to conjugations and such.

That site is pretty good. I don't use it much though, cuz I use my books instead. I take it you speak Russian at home then? You should ask your parents to speak Russian with you all the time. I asked my Grandmother to speak to me only in Spanish from now on (which she was very happy about because she doesn't speak English too well) and my Spanish has really improved.

Also keep in mind that there are two parts to understanding language: Active and Passive. It's much easier to do Passive understanding (reading and listening) then it is to do active (speaking and writing). But practicing your passive a lot helps your active...

Haha that is the exact opposite of the problem I have. I speak Spanish alright but write it terribly. And I ahve no one to practice my Russian with lol.

One of the main things that throw me off in spelling are the soft signs. It's hard to tell when they come up, but otherwise everything seems to be spelled how it sounds. Unlike in English! ^_^

I don't know of a site, but this book I got helps alot. It's the Berlitsz Essential Russia and explains the little things as to why things may be spelled a certain way, where commas are placed, verb/grammar help, and little things people often confuse about the language.

Actually, I have that book and it is the worst out of all the ones I have. Sorry! I don't mean to sound mean or anything. But I have like 4 Russian books and that one is definately the worst. The New Penguin's "Russian Course" is better.

Maybe your problem with the soft signs is because you did not get used to pronounce palatalized consonants? It is not a problem at all for native-speakers because it's always hearable if the soft sign is needed.

There is some old joke about it:

- Почему вилька и тарелька пишутся бэз Ь, а кров и любов - с Ь?
- Понять это нэвозможно. Это нужно запомныт.

I think that reading of fiction books (художественная литература) would help your spelling. You simply will remember how words look. And if you don't have much of paper Russian books, you can find some of them in elecronic form, for example, on http://lib.ru/ . It's a giant e-text library of texts in Russian.

Of course, you can read news and any other texts in Russian. Beware of texts on forums, etc: they often can be misspelled.
