I have a (fairly urgent, eek!) vocabulary question: what is the Russian phonetic term for a trilled sound, like /r/? I've tried looking it up, but I can't tell if I'm finding the right word or not.

Edit: Also, can anyone tell me where the stress in "альвеолярный" is? (Is this even the right word?)

АльвеолЯрный is ok. Я is stressed.
What's trilled r? I don`t get it.

the Russian phonetic term for it is - вибрант
you can also use phrases: вибрирующее "r" or грассированное "r"

Would you say that the term вибрант is similar to the English term "approximant", or is it closer to "trill"?

(If I understand right, the trilled "r" in Russian isn't an approximant; a trilled sound might not also be "r", although I "r" is the only trilled sound in Russian.)

This page (http://www.linguistlist.org/unicode/ipa.html) kind of shows what I mean by trill -- it's a class that a sound can belong to, like a fricative or a plosive.

Vibrant is also used in English, I think. Anyway, you can use either вибрант or дрожащий (звук) for 'vibrant'. By the way, "грассированное р" means usually some variety of the uvular trill.

Yeah, vibrant is used, I know that, but is it the equivalent of "trill", do you know?

All of these overlapping, varying phonetic terms are sometimes confusing; I'm not used to "vibrant" so I'm not sure of the definition in English.

In Russian grammar "r" is characterized as "дрожащий"
