Hello! My name is Tiffany. I'm 19 years old and live in Minnesota. I've been trying to learn Russian for a few months, not only for my benefit but also by request of my grandmother. My great-grandfather came over from Russia during the revolution but never really spoke the language or talked about his country, and now I have a great interest in it but no one to teach me. I've bought a few dictionaries and tapes, but I'd like to know of any good music, movies, or books that I could download or purchase to help me with hearing and reading it. Does anyone recommend anything?

dobriy! i was lucky enough to learn russian in school, but i would recommend listening to russian music and translating news articles as a way to reinforce words into your head. i've yet to find any REALLY good bands, but i tend to listen to:

tatu (duh, think we all do.. but i've been doing it for almost two years now!! :D)
gosti iz budeshchego
virus
i.t.d.

if anyone has any better recommendations for music, i would be most appreach.

and for news sites, lenta.ru has some good stuff, as does strana.ru.. and of course:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/russian/news/default.stm

good old bbc :D

and this is probably the best online dictionary that i've found thusfar:

http://translation2.paralink.com/

enjoy!
po pozhe!

Privet! My name is Miyaka, also 19 and I live in California. Been studying for a year, loving it more and more.

Music:
I love Victor Tsoy!!! Other than that, I am only familiar with classical/traditional type stuff. Ivan Rebroff does the classics really well: Kalinka Malinka, Oche Chornye, Ach Natascha, etc.

Movies:

Anything by NIkita MNikhalkov especially Burnt By The Sun (Utomlyonnye Solntsem) and Anna (Anna: Ot shesti do vosemnadtsati)
Russian Ark is supposed to be really good, but I haven't seen it.

Mind you, all these are recommends from an someone who is just barely familiar with the surface layer. So I'm sure other people would have some better ideas.

Have fun :)

Welcome :)
From Russian music I can recommend Zemfira, she's the best in my opinion :) Besides, Aquarium, Моральный кодекс..

As for the films we have so many :) It's been a problem for me to choose what film to send to my friend who's learning Russian as well :) My favourite is Ирония судьбы, или с лёгким паром! It runs on Russian TV every year on New Year's evening (because it's a New Year story). It's very _Russian_ film :) Well, we have also loads of good films.. Покровские ворота, Формула любви, Гараж, Ищите женщину, Обыкновенное чудо, etc, etc, etc :)

As you learn only since a few months, a language course could help you. But I mention all resources I know of. And I write in english, you probably do not yet read easily in russian.

Language Course: The Rosetta Stone, russkaya yasyk I, russkaya yasyk II
from www.rosettastone.com

Dictionary: Pocket Oxford Russian Dictionary

Grammar: I only know one in russian, but not in english, here it is, and it is VERY good, specially made for foreigners:
М.А.Шелякин, Справочник по русской грамматике, издательство Русский язык, Москва, 2003, ISBN 5-200-03213

I also know several Russian grammars in german, one is very bref but good.

Songs: I love Valeriya (Валерия). The texts are on the net, to verify.

Skazki: google for Chuk i Gek (Чук и Гек), or why not Red Riding Hat (http://members.madasafish.com/~russica3/)

Internet Radio: www.europaplus.ru, www.echomsk.ru, www.rusradio.ru, www.radiomayak.ru

Internet TV: www.1tv.ru, www.rutv.ru .

You can also set up your computer with a Windows 98 SE in Русская версия.

In Russia, there are a very lot of language books and CD-ROM s for school children.

Um...this is going to sound odd, but I recommend AGAINST buying an books in Russain outside of textbooks. Music can help immensly for getting a feel of the sound system, but avoid trying to "understand" it until you have at least some substaintial expreince. I'm a native Russain speaker, and the rason I say this is...it's difficult to explain. Russain is not as defined as most langauges. Many statements/words have very ....vague meanings that depend a lot on the context, the other words one uses, even the situation or the way their're said. Some words exist only complment other words. It's very difficult to get a grasp on it because the nature of the words are very vague .

I defidently suggest getting a tutor. It may sound snobbish, but I've been exposed ( I can't say "studyed", exactly, I;m too lazy to study) to german, french, japanese, russain and english, and out of all of them russain is still the hardest despite the fact that I've spoken it my whole life :P .

What kind of music, movies do you like? "Russian" doesn't mean anything specific.

Try to find "Кин-Дза-Дза" and "Падал прошлогодний снег" movies. They are good for start i think.
