In written Russian, З is supposed to look like this, right: z right? (Note: requires special fonts)

Nope, not really. Handwritten Russian "z" looks just like my handwritten Latin "z", which I can't describe here.

According to the 6 or 7 Russian grammars I have, "z" in handwriting looks just like the style of cursive latin script "z" that resembles the number "3". Italic printed characters, which usually resemble handwritten characters, concur: з (if you have the appropriate font installed). AFAICT, the cyrillic for "z" never looks like the latin or greek "Z" shape.

Yes, quite like this, but the upper curl should be more round :) I mean, here it looks like an angle and it should be round like a reversed c. I hope I make myself clear =)

Oh, forgot to say. It looks like this only in lower-case. Capitalized it looks like the number 3.

In some very special case Cyrillic "З" is written with a Latin "Z". I've seen that a few times, like for music bands (Zемфира, КариZма), or in a magazine cut out in which "news" was written "нюz", but this is really rare.

2corriel: the words where Cyrillic "3" is replaced with Latin one are usually not of Russian origin or they intend to do that because lately in Russia it became cool to replace one or two letters in the name of the band with Latin equivalent...

a sample of my hand mousewriting, to definitively illustrate what you mean

I repeat, I wrote this with a mouse on the screen, my real handwriting is much, much nicer :)
