Looking at my old visas, one has this word stamped on it. It's very faded, though, so I could be mistaken about the spelling. I'm having trouble figuring out what this word means exactly. The root of it isn't in my dictionary (or I'm just not recognizing it) and my favorite online translator is no help.

The only context I can provide is that this particular visa was for single entry. My program replaced/converted it to multi-entry, and of course I never got a sticker in my passport to show for it, just a piece of paper I've since lost.

Any ideas?

Погашено
literally - extinguished.
It means, that this document is no longer valid

Means it's no longer valid, because you've got another visa now.

You know it already, it means "Stamped"

.
That is similar to the postal stamping: a cancellation mark should be applied over a stamp and the envelope), the procedure marks the item as used or cancelled, which prevents its reuse.

ПОГАШЕНО means cancelled - you used your 'single entry', no second chance this time =) The word is ГАСИТЬ, ПОГАСИТЬ. Literally 'extinguish'. This is what they do with post stamps in the office: the stamp is no longer valid and the letter is processed.
Probably the guy at the border control didn't acknowledge your right for multiple entry.

No, usually when you get a student/work visa, you get a 3-month visa first and then you get it extended to a year or however long your study/work thing is for. You then get a new visa that is a separate piece of paper and they stamp ПОГАШЕНО on the original; it has nothing to do with the border people.

To the OP: staple your multi-entry visa into your passport when it is done because this ПОГАШЕНО can cause problems with getting a new visa if it's not obvious that this visa was extended, not cancelled because you were kicked out of Russia.

Obviously you now know what the word means, but I was more interested in where and when you went, and who your program was if you don't mind sharing. :D

I was on the same program in St. Petersburg myself just this past Fall. :D I know when deciding which program to take, there weren't too many so I had a feeling you may have been a past CIEE student as well. Jarlath and Katya were there as well when you were, correct?

But it makes me so happy to talk with past students who have been to Russia. I really wished I would have stayed the year versus the semester, I fell in love with the country something fierce.

But I am so jealous. Ever since I've been back, all I've wanted to do is return. Haha. As far as the CLS program goes, is that also through school, or have you since graduated? Or part of grad school? :3

Ah, Katya was with Jarlath in helping the students and what not, I believe Irina was the new program director when I was there.

But that excites me greatly, because already a few of my friends I met there are going back, either for internships in Moscow, or to neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan. But now that I know about the program, I will be applying every year. Thank you so much for the info. :D
