Hi everyone,

I am trying to prepare homemade fettuccine alfredo for friends in Donetsk. What is the Russian for heavy cream...if there is an equivalent? Also, if you know it in Ukrainian, could you tell me that as well--all the items at the store are written in Ukrainian. However, everyone speaks Russian---so if I just know the Russian I should be good to go!

It is cливки in Russian and вершки in Ukrainian. However, heavy cream contains ~30% of fat while сливки may have only 15-20%, so you will have to check the package label.

Жирные сливки. Heavy cream has aboout 35-40% fat content, сливки in Russia and I would assume Ukraine are usually sold in different varieties according to their fat content, so the buyer should check that it is in this range or close.

I would guess "двойные сливки" should do the trick. With fat content over %30 they are the densest creme available commercially outside of the village farm.

I'd say simply "тридцатипроцентные сливки" ("thirty-percent cream") if I needed to tell somebody what I want.
