Verbs of motion!
Apr. 27th, 2010 06:54 pmThe way I was taught Russian verbs of motion was very simplistic. Now I'm trying to understand them in greater detail.
Below the cut are some English sentences. If any native Russian speakers are willing to translate into Russian, I would be grateful! I want to see what verbs you think are most appropriate. Even translating just one or two would be helpful.
Right now I'm focusing on идти, ходить, and their prefixed versions, so imagine everyone is walking to their destinations.
Situation 1
You're at work talking with a coworker. How would you say:
1a. I come to work every day at eight.
1b. I came to work at eight.
1c. I go home every day at five.
1d. I'm going home today at five.
1e. I'm going to the cafeteria. Do you want to come?
1d. I'm going to the cafeteria. I'll come back in half an hour.
1f. I'm leaving now.
Situation 2
You're at home talking to a family member. How would you say:
2a. I went to the store to buy groceries.
2b. I went out. (not to anywhere specific)
2c. I'm going to work now. (as you're leaving)
2d. I'm going to work at at twelve.
Situation 3
A parent and a small child are at the park and the child has started to run off. How would they usually say:
3a. Parent: Come here!
3b. Child: (in reply) I'm coming!
Situation 4
Your friend is hosting a party at his house and has invited you. How would you say:
4a. I'll come to your party.
4b. Is Ivan coming to your party? (you do not like Ivan and will not come if he's there)
4c. Is Ivan coming to your party? (you like Ivan and will definitely come if he's there!)
4d. I'm sorry, I can't come to your party.
Edit: I added one more situation because I forgot to include it. :)
Edit 2: Thank you, everyone who answered!
